Attention Writers, Amazon, HP & Penguin Offering $25,000+ Prize
Written on October 1, 2007 by Amanda M. Gladden
The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award launched October 1, 2007. Though this is not directly related to opening a typical business, it will ultimately catapult one lucky author’s writing business and career. Here are the details.
Amazon’s Breakthrough Novel Award is open to writers from more than 20 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and Japan. Authors can enter their unpublished English-language novel manuscript for consideration through Amazon’s CreateSpace website starting October 1 through November 5, 2007 or whenever the first 5,000 entries have been received, whichever is earlier. (CreateSpace is a self-publishing platform that enables authors, filmmakers and musicians to create and sell books, DVDs and CDs on demand).
A maximum of five thousand entrants will be accepted. So you might want to move as quickly as possible to at least register to participate. Once registered, you will have 7 days to upload your submision.
Here are a few interesting things about the contest:
I. Customers of Amazon.com get to participate in the judging process.
How is the contest being judged?
The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award consists of a qualifying period in which Amazon editors and Top Reviewers evaluate the submissions, a semi-final period in which excerpts are posted online for customer feedback (through ratings and reviews) with Penguin selecting the finalists, and a finalist period in which Amazon customers determine the winner.
II. All entrants will receive free proof copies of their books.
CreateSpace will offer to contest entrants free proof copies of their books via its self-publishing platform so authors can make their books available on-demand to a worldwide audience of tens of millions of customers on Amazon.com
Take a Look at the Prizes!
One (1) Grand Prize will be awarded, consisting of:
A full publishing contract with Penguin to market and distribute Grand Prize winner’s winning Manuscript as a published book, including promotion for such published book on Amazon.com.

Amanda, thank you for posting this. I had not heard a thing about this contest!
I will give it a shot. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if a readers of your blog won some of
these great contests and business plan competitions you’ve been listing here??

I submitted my novel, Diary of a Heretic, to the contest. They really have their act together. It took about five or ten minutes to complete the application and download my novel, and perhaps half a day to hear they’d received my submission and was thus in the running. On the application they asked one question that no one’s asked before, and which for me really hit home: “What gave you the courage to write the novel?”
That question implied so much respect for my efforts and a genuine interest in what goes into my writing. It’s a question I confront every day when I sit down to write and no one has ever me about it before.
I tend to run toward my greatest fears–meaning life challenges, not speeding cars or burning buildings. My writing courage comes from knowing there is nothing wrong with failing. Part of the art involves reaching as far as possible. Sometimes I fail, and sometimes…to my mind, I succeed, whether anyone else acknowledges or even reads my work.

@Michelle- I would be tickled if a member of my blog’s readership applied for and won anything I’ve listed here…are you kidding!!
@Kathleen - Thank you for letting us know that you went ahead and submitted. That is an interesting question for sure. I imagine it takes just as much courage if not more to enter the contest as well.
This is very exciting. Best of luck to you Kathleen and I’d love to see a pic of the proof when you get it

Kathleen,
You apparently are not the only Kathleen Maher to have entered. When I googled my name for ABNA, this site came up. Join the forum at ABNA, if you haven’t already. But you might want to use a different middle initial than “L.” or none at all.
: )
My submission is entitled The Face of Redemption. Check out my myspace at:
Myspace.com/thefaceofredemption
Hope to see you on the forum especially after Jan 15.

Amanda & Kathleen L..
Thanks so much for showing me what’s up!
Kathleen L, I’m glad to meet you here and will certainly join the forum, about which I had no idea. More, though, I’m eager to learn about you and your writing and look forward to what you have going on MySpace.
Amanda, accept my gratitude. Thanks to you and your blog, I first found out about the contest, have since learned about several other avenues and how to find them, and have now met a namesake and running-mate, who must be a like-mind to have stepped forward and kindly introduced herself.
Best wishes for the season and beyond.

Thanks, Amanda and Kathleen!
The latest on the forum is a small uproar over premature postings of semifinalists on an Amazon site. They have been deleted now, but for a day 114 people must have had a happy holiday indeed!
Kathleen, what is your genre? I’d love to learn more about your book. Best wishes.
